
The CEN-CENELEC Joint Technical Committee 21 (JTC 21) on Artificial Intelligence was established on June 1, 2021, to address the growing need for standardization in the field of AI within the European context. This committee was created to shape standards that ensure the development of trustworthy AI systems that respect fundamental values and human rights recognized in Europe.
Establishment and purpose
JTC 21 was formed with the primary objectives of:
- Producing standardization deliverables in the field of AI and related data use

- Supporting EU legislation, policies, principles, and values
- Considering the adoption of relevant international standards
The committee brings together experts from more than 20 countries, nominated through their national standardization organizations, and includes a delegation from the European Commission.

- Developing homegrown standards, including: AI trustworthiness framework, AI risk management, AI quality management system, and AI conformity assessment
